Police arrest homicide suspect wanted for shooting that led to crash in Murray

MURRAY, Utah — Police in Murray confirm a suspect in a fatal shooting and crash that occurred October 25 in the area of 4500 South and State Street has been arrested in Oregon and charged with murder.

Murray City Police identified the suspect in the homicide Thursday as 19-year-old Lucas Deprey.

Deprey is charged with one count of murder as a first-degree felony, one count of obstructing justice as a second-degree felony, and one count of possession of a firearm by a restricted person as a second-degree felony.

Police also identified the victim as 33-year-old Ever Hernandez.

According to charging documents, someone contacted police on October 31 and told officers Deprey had contacted them via social media about the news coverage of the murder, saying “my picture was on there.”  Deprey told the individual he was stranded in Oregon and needed money, and the individual arranged to wire some funds to Deprey.

Acting on this tip, police responded to Springfield, Oregon (the location of the money transfer) and arrested Deprey.

Deprey has three prior convictions for violent felonies, the documents state, including aggravated assault. As such he is restricted from possessing a firearm.

The fatal incident began with a shooting in a parking lot near the intersection at 4500 South and State Street. Police say Deprey approached a vehicle and opened the passenger door before shooting Hernandez, who was behind the wheel, in the head.

The victim drove out of the parking lot after being shot, causing a 5-vehicle crash. There were no serious injuries reported as a result of the crash.

Hernandez died due to the gunshot wound, charging documents state.
