SALT LAKE CITY - A suspect is in custody after SWAT responded in Salt Lake City Sunday.

Police say things began around 9:15 a.m. when the suspect, identified as 32-year-old Darin Ackman, barricaded himself inside his home following a domestic violence incident.

Police used extreme caution in responding because they feared Ackman was armed.

“There was talk that there was weapons involved," said Det. Greg Wilking of Salt Lake City Police.

The stand-off was in the area of 1500 Hayes Ave. and went for about five hours.

“We didn't have contact throughout most of this incident, so from about 9:15 when the incident took place and he fled that scene and came to this house, we haven’t had contact with him," Wilking said.

As the suspect remained silent, police called in SWAT.

“We’d rather do it slow and right than try to hurry things along and possibly have someone get injured," Wilking said.

Due to the cold temperatures, UTA brought in a bus so officers could warm-up on breaks from maintaining the containment around the home.

"The weather is playing a factor in terms of being able to stay on containment for long periods of time," Wilking said.

After about five hours, police forced Ackman out of the home.

“We introduced a chemical substance to the house and our subject exited the house and was taken into custody," Wilking said.

There were no injuries reported in connection with the incident. Police say Ackman has several outstanding warrants for domestic violence and will face additional charges as a result of Sunday's incident.

"This is the best possible solution to have it end peacefully—and like I said, sometimes when you slow things down and make sure you do it right, in order to make sure everybody’s safe," Wilking said.
