Soul and Funk musician Sharon Jones, the lead singer for Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, has died at the age of 60 following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
The band posted a statement on their website Friday, saying in part:
“We are deeply saddened to announce that Sharon Jones has passed away after a heroic battle against pancreatic cancer. She was surrounded by her loved ones, including the Dap-Kings.
Thank you for your prayers and thoughts during this difficult time.”
The statement asked that, in lieu of flowers, well-wishers consider a donation to several organizations. Click here for details.
The band’s website states Jones returned to the stage after a 2013 cancer diagnosis and earned a Grammy nomination in 2014 for her album, “Give the People What They Want.”
