OMAHA, Neb. — Police in Omaha are investigating the death of an infant who was allegedly thrown from a second-story window after the 16-year-old mother delivered the baby alone in her bedroom.

Nichole Manna of the Lincoln Journal Star tweeted a press release from the Omaha Police Department, which states officers were dispatched to an apartment complex in Omaha around 4 a.m. Friday.

Paramedics arrived on scene to find an adult woman giving CPR to an infant in the parking lot of the apartment complex. Paramedics took over medical assistance and transported the child to a local hospital, where the infant was pronounced dead. A 16-year-old girl was also taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation.

The release states detectives learned a 16-year-old girl had allegedly gone into labor while alone in her bedroom and gave birth to a premature baby early Friday morning. The teen allegedly threw the infant out of the second story window after the birth, then told her mother what had happened.

The teen’s mother then went outside and found the infant in the grass before calling 911 and beginning CPR.

Police state that the investigation is in its early stages and that autopsy results are not expected for several days. According to the press release, the Douglas County Juvenile County Attorney is aware of the investigation, and any potential charges in the case are pending the outcome of the autopsy and investigation.
