NEWTON, Utah — Fire destroyed two barns and most of two haystacks in the Cache County town of Newton, according to the Cache County Fire Department.
Firefighters from several local fire agencies were called to 200 N. Center Street around 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon, and the structures were fully engulfed in flames when they arrived. Firefighters went into defensive mode to protect nearby structures, according to the fire department.
The milk barn and the hay barn were a total loss, as were two cars, a motorcycle, and a small tractor, Newton Fire Chief, Greg Jorgensen said.
Wind carried embers to two nearby haystacks, and caught them on fire, but firefighters were able to save a lot of the hay.
Firefighters from Newton, Clarkston, Trenton, Smithfield, North Logan, Richmond, Lewiston and Cache County battled the flames. One firefighter was treated on scene for minor smoke inhalation, according to the Newton Fire Department’s Facebook page.
Investigators still haven’t released a cause for the fire.
