SANDY, Utah — A teenage boy is in critical condition after being hit by a car on I-15 Tuesday night.

It happened around 7:20 on the right side of northbound I-15 near 8700 S.

According to Sgt. Todd Royce of the Utah Highway Patrol, a backpack fell from a vehicle loaded with camping gear. The driver of that vehicle pulled over to the right side of the road and a 17-year-old boy got out to retrieve the backpack. The boy was then hit by an oncoming car. He was taken to Intermountain Medical Center in critical condition, Royce said.

The Utah Highway Patrol urges drivers to call them for assistance if something falls from a vehicle on the Interstate.
