SALT LAKE CITY -- A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed while riding in a car with his two friends, according to Salt Lake City police.

Officers found the car with the boy dead inside it at the Glendale area at 1100 West and 985 South by the Jordan River Parkway.

But the shooting happened several blocks away at 1000 West and 600 North.

Police found several shell casings there.

They said the two teenagers with the victim did not call for help.

Instead they contacted a friend and then that friend called 911.

Neighbor, Michael Clark, said he has always felt safe in the area the last few years he has lived here. He lives across from where the 16-year-old's body was found sitting inside the front passenger seat.

"This was rather an abrupt and unpleasant turnaround from what was a very nice Fourth of July," Clark said.

Another neighbor concerned about showing her face on camera, said this was hard for her because she is also just 16-years-old.

"It's a scary feeling knowing stuff like this can happen around here. I just hope they get who did it because it was a really hurtful thing for his family."

Police have not released the victim's name because he is a juvenile. FOX 13 is waiting to confirm suspect details.
