SALT LAKE CITY -- You can now track snow plows in real time thanks to a new feature on the Utah Department of Transportation's app.

UDOT unveiled the tracking tool on Tuesday, which uses cell phone technology to keep tabs on each of its 500 plows.

"They'll be able to click on either our website or through our app, and see where every snow plow is in the state and where it's been in the last 30 minutes," explained UDOT Director of Operations Jason Davis.

A purple line highlights the route freshly swept by the driver, while a little plow icon shows where the truck is currently at, and which direction it's headed.

Davis said users can use it to figure out which major roads and highways have been cleared as they plan their commute.

The feature's unveiling comes as another storm system moves through the state.

"This is going to be an extremely busy week for UDOT," said UDOT spokeswoman Leigh Gibson.

That's why, Davis hopes the new tool is, "going to hopefully help the public move more efficiently and safely throughout the state."
