SALT LAKE CITY — Former Real Salt Lake head coach Jason Kreis has been fired by New York City FC after just one season after the Major League Soccer expansion team failed to make the playoffs, despite a roster with international stars like Frank Lampard, David Villa and Andrea Pirlo.
A statement from the club said: “Prior to the start of the season, it was agreed with the coaching team that securing a playoff place was an appropriate target for this year. A win rate of less than one in three games and a points tally which was the second lowest in the league is clearly not in line with the targets we were agreed.”
Kreis was the head coach of RSL for seven seasons, leading RSL to the MLS Cup title in 2009. He left RSL after leading the team to the MLS Cup finals in 2013.
Kreis is the first player in RSL history after he was traded to the club in 2004. His number 9 jersey was retired by former RSL owner Dave Checketts in 2011.
