Officers went to the home and learned the man had a firearm and was threatening to take his own life.

Logan City and Cache County SWAT teams negotiated with the man for hours and neighbors were evacuated from their homes as a precaution.

"They just told us to leave," neighbor Donnie Dominy said. "We were out working on our boat and they just told us to leave because it was dangerous in the area."

Authorities said the man eventually opened the door and fired at police.

A Logan City police and Cache County deputies returned fire and shot 53-year-old Roger Darrin Barker.

Emergency crews rushed him to the hospital where he later died.
