HOLLADAY, Utah -- Unified Police Department personnel responded to a home in Holladay where a man had been firing shots from a gun, and though no one has been hit police evacuated residents in nearby homes while they worked to negotiate with the man--who has now been taken into custody.

Chief Deputy Justin Hoyal, UPD, said the incident occurred in the area of 1600 East Fieldcrest Lane (4975 South) and that homes that potentially may have been in the line of fire were evacuated. The man had reportedly been firing shots from inside his home, and when police arrived two women were seen leaving the home. They made it out safely, though shots were still being fired at this time.

FOX 13 News first heard reports of shots fired around 4:30 p.m., and by around 5:20 p.m. Hoyal confirmed the 54-year-old man had been taken into custody. A SWAT team responded, though by the time they arrived the man was observed exiting the home and laying down to surrender.

Police said the man is being committed to a hospital Wednesday night for a psychiatric evaluation.
