My Little Pony convention welcomes 800 ‘Bronies’ to downtown SLC

SALT LAKE CITY -- If you're a man in your forties, you probably remember My Little Pony from the commercials that imprinted a girly, sing-songy tune in your head as you tried to watch morning cartoons.

If you're a man in your twenties or thirties, you may be a "brony," which is an adult who is drawn to the themes of friendship and harmony exemplified by the ponies in their more recent manifestation in the show "My Little Pony, Friendship is Magic."

Those were the people gathered in force at Salt Lake City's downtown Radisson Hotel for the Crystal Mountain Pony Con.

In it's third year, the Pony Con has gone from a dog and pony (sorry!) sideshow of 200 people to an 800 person convention--taking up the entire second floor conference space of a big hotel.

"We are celebrating the magic of friendship," said David Halliday, a senior at Brigham Young University studying civil engineering.
