SALT LAKE CITY -- Flag sellers find themselves in an unfamiliar position as they respond to the controversy surrounding the Confederate Battle Flag in South Carolina.

Utah flag company Colonial Flag, located in Sandy, does sell the Confederate Battle Flag, though they removed the flag from their website and their showroom because of ongoing controversy.

"Colonial flag is very understanding of the increased emotion that is tied with this situation right now," said John Hartvigsen, an advisor to Colonial and President of the American Vexillological Association.

U.S. Flag, a manufacturer located in Kansas City does not carry Confederate Flags at all.

"I can't say it was all political, though that was part of it," said Tyler Young with U.S. Flag.

Young said U.S. Flag relies on large contracts and they were concerned that the negative connotations associated with the Confederate Flag would hurt business.

"We realized we can alienate customers by carrying Confederate flags, but we don't alienate them by not carrying the flags," Young said.
