HAZLET, N.J. — A New Jersey teen was originally told his senior quote wouldn’t be published due to its “shock value,” but the young man’s parents, friends and even some teachers congratulated him for it.

According to a report by WAGA-TV, 18-year-old Maxwell Barrett wanted his yearbook quote to be something others could remember him by.

The quote said: “‘Of course I dress well, I didn’t spend all that time in the closet for nothing.’ -Unknown”

According to the report, Barrett was already “out” as gay to many of the people around him and, although he suspected they already knew, he had never officially told his parents.

“It was just more of a confirmation to [my parents] than a coming-out story,” Barrett said. “They said it was the best one in the yearbook and that they were proud of me.”

Barrett also received praise and congratulations from friends and teachers, the report said. Click here to read more from WAGA-TV.
