SALT LAKE CITY -- The Maverik Center in Salt Lake City was packed with robots and teenagers Friday during a regional competition that will continue through Saturday.

Utah's FIRST Robotics Competition began with seeding matches on Friday, and Saturday the final rounds will be held. The regional event featured 53 high school teams from 11 states and Canada, all of whom are competing to see which robot can stack and sort recyclable materials the fastest.

According to a press release from event organizers, the annual competition tasks teens with designing and building robots to perform a specific job, and the event is free and open to the public.
