1 man dead after crash, car fire on I-15; accident now cleared

MIDVALE, Utah — A man died Monday afternoon after a crash and car fire on northbound Interstate 15 near 7200 South..

Crews responded to the accident at about 3 p.m.

According to Sgt. Todd Royce with the Department of Public Safety, a motorist swerved and hit the concrete wall dividing north and southbound traffic, causing the vehicle to burst into flames. It is unknown at this time why the driver swerved.

As a motorist passed the car fire, the car clipped the wreckage. The driver stopped and pulled the man from the burning car.

The victim, 37-year-old Antonio Lopez, of West Valley City, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash was cleared at about 4:50 p.m., according to a tweet from Utah Department of Transportation.

Officials say traffic was backed up 7200 South to about 11100 South.
