DAVIS COUNTY — Thirty-three students were evacuated off a Davis County school bus after the rear engine caught fire, officials said Tuesday afternoon.

The bus was traveling up the 500 West on-ramp to Interstate 15 north to Bountiful when the flames were seen. The driver pulled over and the students were taken off safely off the bus.

A Utah Highway Patrol trooper saw the burning bus and used an extinguisher to put out most of the flames before fire crews arrived, said Chris Williams, spokesman for the Davis County School District.

Jeff Bassett, spokesman for South Davis Metro Fire, said it’s believed the engine developed an oil leak. The heat from the engine or exhaust ignited the oil.

Damage to the bus is minor. It was towed from the scene.

Students were picked up by a second bus to continue their ride home.
