WEST VALLEY CITY – A man is facing charges in connection with the death of an infant in West Valley City, and the man was recently caught on camera at the scene of an alleged attempted robbery.

Gene Richins, 31, is accused in the death of an infant who died in August of 2013, and the man faces a charge of child abuse homicide, which is a first-degree felony.

According to a press release from the West Valley City Police Department, Richins was the sole caretaker of the child prior to her death. Officers responded to a home after a 911 call, and they found the 8-month-old child deceased.

Initial reports did not indicate a cause of death, but autopsy and toxicology results later indicated that the child had a prescription drug in her system that was not prescribed to the child. Richins had told police he’d only administered Children’s Tylenol. The presence of the same prescription drug was found among items seized by investigators.

Richins was caught on camera allegedly burglarizing a jewelry store recently.
