SALT LAKE CITY — A University of Utah football player is in critical condition after a motorized bike accident Sunday night.

University officials said Moana Ofahengaue, a redshirt freshman defensive lineman for the Utes, sustained a serious head injury after crashing a scooter near Hempstead Rd. and Mario Capecchi Drive.

Kathy Wilets, University Hospital Public Affairs, said family members are optimistic about Ofahengaue’s recovery, and they want to express their gratitude for the support they have received.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Moana and his family during this very difficult time,” said Utah coach Kyle Whittingham. “He is a beloved member of our team and we will support him in his recovery in any way we can.”

A report about the crash did not indicate whether or not Ofahengaue was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash or if there were any contributing factors like drugs, alcohol or drowsy driving.

FOX 13 will update this story with the latest details as soon as they become available.
