SALT LAKE CITY – A man is in a hospital after an officer-involved shooting that occurred late Friday night in Salt Lake City.

Police responded to an apartment complex at 164 S. 900 W. at about 11 p.m. after receiving reports a man was experiencing a mental health crisis and threatening to burn down his home.

According to a press release from the Salt Lake City Police Department, the man would not allow officers to come inside, and officers said they could smell natural gas. At that time they entered the residence out of concern for the safety of the man and others.

According to the press release, when police entered, “the subject was found to be in possession of an object officers believed to be a knife. He lunged at one of the officers, who fired once.”

The man was taken to a local hospital, where he is expected to recover. Specific details regarding his injuries were not immediately available.

The officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave, which is department policy in any such incidents.

The Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office determined that the use of deadly force was legally justified.
