WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah -- A 9-month-old girl is in critical condition after falling into a bucket with water in it and nearly drowning.

Paramedics responded to a home in West Valley just before 2 p.m. Thursday. The girl had fallen head first into a five-gallon bucket with water in it, according to authorities. It is not clear how long the child was in the water.

"The baby was not breathing at all and she was pretty blue," said Patsy Cobiellas, a neighbor.

Authorities said the baby was taken to Pioneer Valley Hospital where doctors were able to establish the baby's breathing and a heartbeat. She was then transported by helicopter to Primary Children's Hospital where she is in critical condition.

Police said it appears to be an accident and there are no signs of anything suspicious.
