SALT LAKE CITY – The third floor of the library at the University of Utah is closed after some creepy-crawlies were found in the chairs.
A library patron noticed bed bugs and reported them on Tuesday, and health investigators confirmed the pests were bed bugs.
Officials said the bugs don’t harbor any diseases, but the third floor was closed as a precaution. Valoree Dowell, interim communication director at the University of Utah, said the situation is likely a first for the building.
“It’s not unusual for pests like this to be in public buildings, large public buildings where there is a lot of human beings congregating,” Dowell said. “First time in the library that I am aware of.”
The library remains open, and officials said business is not interrupted by the closure of the third floor. It is unknown when the third floor will reopen.
