The Utah Transit Authority is changing the way commuters pay for transit with a new prepaid card.

UTA officials said the cards will increase convenience for commuters, and will make way for lower fares. They said unlike previous gift cards, the prepaid card will function like a debit card.

UTA spokesperson Remi Barron said he is excited for the new option.

"This is going to allow our customers to stop using cash and be able to go online or to our customer service centers and put money down on the card, and then they can just tap on and tap off, and shortly after that, soon, they can buy them at local retailers like Walgreens, Walmart, Associated Food Stores, 711," Barron said.
