SALT LAKE CITY - Hundreds of people checked out the lizards, snakes, and spiders at the Wasatch Reptile Expo at the Utah State Fairgrounds this weekend.

The event gives people a chance to learn about exotic species, and reptile enthusiasts said every year they see more people interested in taking home untraditional pets.

"You come here and see people who have always had an interest but never quite delved into the hobby," said Joey Mugleston, who is an exotic animal dealer. “They walk away with their first pet, and they are all excited about it.”

The two-day event drew larger than expected crowds, including many children who wanted to learn a little something about things that creep and crawl. Reptile expert Kim Lange said they are lessons they are happy to teach.

"It's very educational and the kids get to handle things too," she said. "They get over a lot of those fears that they might have learned from their parents. It's something we learn, not something we are born with."

Some exotic reptiles came to FOX 13’s Good Day Utah Saturday, click here for the video.
