SANDY, Utah - A Sandy man is in custody after police say he beat his wife's 85-year-old grandmother to death with a golf club.

Police say that just after 10 p.m. Thursday, they received a call from a woman saying her husband, 41-year-old Kevin Cuillard, was having some sort of psychotic episode and was beating her grandmother, Arla Christensen, with a golf club.

Christensen's granddaughter told police she couldn't get into the room to stop her husband and was worried about her four children, so she ran out of the house to call police.

When they arrived at the home, located at 10164 South Bannor Hill Road (1985 East), police found Christensen dead. Cuillard was still at the home and was taken into custody.

Cuillard allegedly admitted to police the blood on his clothes belonged to "grandma."

In an interview, Cuillard reportedly told police he did it to "make things better," but investigators say he wouldn't elaborate.

"We have no history at that house in terms of law enforcement involvement. It appears there might be some history with some mental health issues. Those are things our investigators are trying to drive a little deeper into," said Sandy Police Sgt. Jon Arnold.

Cuillard is in the Salt Lake County Jail on a first-degree homicide charge.
