MAGNA, Utah – Multiple people were injured and at least one person is dead after a head-on collision in Magna on Sunday.
Unified Police Department officials said the accident occurred around 1:45 p.m. at 3680 S. 8400 W.
Police said the red car drifted across several lanes of traffic before colliding with the pickup truck.
Lt. Justin Hoyal, Unified Police Department, said the 17-year-old driver of the red car was the sole occupant. She was taken to a hospital and is in serious condition.
There was a driver and two passengers in the truck. The driver, a 40-year-old male, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The driver's wife, 37-year-old Jodi Bailey, was sitting next to the driver in the middle seat. She was taken to a hospital, where she passed away. The couple's 14-year-old daughter was in the passenger seat, and she was taken to a hospital with critical injuries.
Police said it is not clear whether the occupants were wearing seat belts.
Witnesses at the scene, like Kevin Rivera, said it was a violent crash.
"I was, you know, on the sidewalk when I saw her drifting over," he said. "When the cars collided it went kind of like this.. and there was debris in the air everywhere."
Rivera said he went to the victim's aid.
"I went, I pulled the airbag out of her face, so she could breathe, and she was shaking she was in shock really bad," he said. "She was screaming some lady's name, and I said, 'Is there was another passenger in the vehicle with you?' She didn't respond she wasn't responsive to what I was asking her."
Police are still investigating the crash. They said they don't know what happened, but at this time they do not believe that alcohol or drugs were factors.
