PAYSON, Utah – Three people are in critical condition and one more is in serious condition after a car accident in Payson Monday afternoon.

Utah Highway Patrol officials said seven cars were involved in the accident, which occurred on I-15 near mile post 248 around 5:15 p.m. I-15 northbound was closed for about an hour, but all lanes were open again as of about 8:30 p.m.

There was heavy traffic on the road because of construction in the area. Police said traffic in the number one travel lane came to an abrupt stop when a vehicle in the number 2 travel lane swerved to avoid another vehicle. The collision created a domino effect, which involved seven vehicles.

Police said six patients were taken to the hospital. Three were in critical condition, one was in serious and the other two had minor injuries. All involved were wearing seat belts.

This is one of several serious car accidents to occur during Memorial Day weekend. Utah Highway Patrol officials refer to the time between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day as the “100 Deadliest Days’ because of the number of severe wrecks.
