TOOELE COUNTY, Utah -- Two people were injured after an explosion at an industrial facility in Tooele County.
Tooele County Dispatch confirmed there had been explosion at an ATI facility located at 12633 North Rowley Road. A medical helicopter was dispatched around 2 p.m.
Two employees were doing a routine maintenance job when something exploded sometime around 1:30 p.m. The two suffered second-degree burns to their hands, faces and upper torsos. One is also having respiratory issues.
The two male victims, aged 53 and 38, are in stable condition. They were taken to the University of Utah burn center by Life Flight Helicopter.
Bucky Whitehouse, Tooele County Emergency Management, said the road to the facility was closed while the two employees were decontaminated--a precaution made necessary by the types of chemicals the men were working with.
"As part of the decontamination process the chemicals were diluted, and the individuals were [decontaminated] in order to make sure that no one else was at risk," he said.
Because of the chemicals used at the facility, an emergency response team is kept on site. That team was able to immediately begin helping the two men.
