OREM, Utah - A Utah Valley University student is taking her senior thesis to the record books.

Inez Harword and her husband Jerel are trying to break the Guinness World Record for longest tie-dye project while bringing awareness to the U.S. cotton industry.

"We started by just doing some research trying to find out how long the longest tie dye was. Then we source cut the fabric from a domestic source and found out how difficult that is because of the state of the U.S. cotton industry," Jerel said.

Inez says she wants to encourage us to start investing in more domestic products.

"We can't go to the store and buy a shirt that says 'Made in America' and actually know that's cotton that was grown here. That's important to me because I want us to start employing in each other and we need to start investing in America and voting for the home team," she said.

The project is 5-and-a-half feet tall and 3,153 feet long. It took 1,000 volunteers to stretch the fabric out for measurement.
