OGDEN, Utah - Ogden Police have released surveillance video to catch two thieves who robbed a jewelry store during business hours. It happened Thursday afternoon at Morgan Jewelers at the Newgate Mall.

The vice president of Morgan Jewelers says the company has never had a robbery of this magnitude. Ogden Police also say it’s unusual and mall customers were stunned when they watched the surveillance video.

The video shows a large black man shielding the other suspect as he prepares to break into a glass case.

“Yep, I see that, yeah right there,” said John Peterson

“Obviously they cased it and thought it through,” Peterson’s wife Wendy remarked.

Ogden police are certain the thieves have done this before.

“They brought some tools to pry it or do something to be able to get into it,” said Lt. Will Cragun.

The thieves grabbed 60-70 pieces of expensive jewelry and put it in a bag they brought into the store.

“That’s just incredible, I’m floored,” said Wendy Peterson

She’s floored that employees and shoppers walking by didn’t notice the heist.

“You think that if you’re gonna do something like this it would take time, and it didn’t.”

The robbery took three minutes, according to the surveillance video, and Morgan Jewelers says its employees were helping other customers at the time.

Company representative Vince Rath adds, “what you can’t see in the video is that sections of the store are packed with post holiday shoppers. We’re thankful no one was injured, that customers and employees are safe.”

Police describe the suspects as black males in their 40s. One is 5’7 to 5’9, the other 6’0 to 6’1. The men have large builds and were wearing dark coats and hats.

They were last seen leaving in a 2000 Pontiac, possibly a red or maroon Grand Am or Grand Prix.
