Three children and one adult were killed in a shooting at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, police said.
Five-year-old Rhoam Summer and two other children aged 8 and 11 were killed, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said at a press conference.

One teacher, identified Friday as Megan Lambert of Bend, was also killed. Lambert graduated from Boise State University.

School officials on Friday said the shooting took place in a special needs classroom.
A seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were hospitalized with critical injuries following the shooting.
Family later publicly identified the injured teacher as Becky Drury, an inclusion specialist at Silver Rail Elementary School. Her family said she suffered an arm and hand wound that required surgery. Her husband asked for privacy for their family as they focus on her recovery.

Police said Friday another teacher threw a cell phone at the suspect and wrestled with him during the shooting, likely helping save lives.
Krantz said a bystander who was carrying a legal firearm entered the school following the suspect and fired on them several times. Police confirmed the suspect was dead shortly afterward.
The man who stopped the suspect was later identified by family as Kaylub Giamanco, a resident of Bend who has two children enrolled at the school.
“He is not seeking recognition, but instead wishes to express his gratitude to the first responders, school personnel and community for the outpouring of love and support,” his mother said in a prepared statement.
In a brief statement Friday, the family of Megan Lambert, the teacher who was killed, addressed those involved:
To Giamanco, they said: "We are grateful and we think he is a hero. You selflessly put yourself at risk for others."
"We would like the other families to know they are in our thoughts and prayers. Megan loved those children, and so we will show your love to her."

The suspect was partially identified as a 16-year-old resident of Bend, who school officials said Friday was a special needs student who had once attended the school. They carried a pump-action shotgun during the shooting and are believed to have traveled to the school on foot. The gun had been purchase by his mother.
Police said Friday that when the suspect approached the school, a pickup driver verbally confronted the suspect and was fired upon. He then called 911.
Police said the suspect forced entry to the school by shooting through the glass panes of locked doors.
Police arrived at the school minutes after the first 911 call, which indicated an "unknown man had shot into a car." The emergency calls after that said the individual had entered the school and started shooting, police said.
The Bend Police Department set up a reunification point for student families at the nearby Journey Church.
The FBI is assisting in the ongoing investigation, according to FBI Director Kash Patel. “We will make every resource they need available,” he said on X.
“We are stunned and heartbroken by this senseless tragedy,” said Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook in a statement. “We extend our deepest sympathy to the families and to everyone affected by this violence. No words can adequately express the grief our community is experiencing.”
In a statement responding to the tragedy, Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon said: “My heart is with the victims of today’s shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School and their loved ones now facing the consequences of another school shooting in America.”
“Once again we must ask how many schools must be shot up before Republicans agree to act to curb gun violence,” he continued.
The school is located more than 100 miles southeast of Portland and serves over 400 students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Bend-La Pine Schools said the entire district will close on Friday, and all school-related activities and sporting events will be postponed or canceled.
