Teacher of the Month: The Sentinels celebrate a 'life-changing' choir teacher

and last updated

This month's teacher is at Mountain Ridge High School, a brand-new school in Herriman, where he is "changing lives" of his choir students, according to Principal Mike Kochevar.

Principal Kochevar told us that - at a recent ceremony - Kelly Dehaan's students "shed tears" talking about how their teacher changed their lives. And that's not the end of his acclaim!

Mr. Dehaan was nominated by two people. They wrote:

"Mr. Dehaan is an amazing educator who helps and encourages the students to grow academically. He is also very friendly and is able to form connections with students to help them survive through high school and feel as though they are always welcome. Especially with MRHS being a new school, I think his friendliness is what helps to make school bearable and helps to build a community that is centered around our school mascot, the Sentinel- always standing watch over each other."

"He works extremely hard for each and every one of his students so they can achieve their dreams. He is understanding and trustworthy in every way. You can always talk to him about anything and he will provide support in any way he can. He teaches like the professional he is and makes sure you understand everything. He goes above and beyond every day just to make his students feel comfortable and included."

He was awarded with a big check from Cyprus Credit Union; $500 to spend on his class and $500 for himself.
