ST. GEORGE, Utah — Dixie State University's women's basketball team will not finish its season.
The university's athletics department announced Tuesday that all women's basketball competition-related activities are suspended for the remainder of the season.
Athletic officials made the decision "with the overall health and wellness of the student-athletes and program in mind."
The team had five of their eight non-conference games canceled due to COVID-19.
"While we are disappointed with this for our women's basketball program and its coaches and student-athletes, it is 100% the right call," athletic director Jason Boothe said. "We have kept the safety and well-being as the top priority for our student-athletes throughout the pandemic and given the issues this team is facing, this decision is right in line with that top priority. Once we get through the pandemic and all the issues it causes for everyone involved, we look forward to having the team back in action next school year."
The announcement did not state if the university's other sports programs are facing the same possibility.
