WASHINGTON — U.S. military veterans and Gold Star families will receive free lifetime passes to visit U.S. national parks.

The Department of Veterans Affairs made the announcement ahead of the Veterans Day holiday on Wednesday.

"With the utmost respect and gratitude, we are granting Veterans and Gold Star Families free access to the iconic and treasured lands they fought to protect starting this Veterans Day and every single day thereafter," said Secretary of the Interior David L. Bernhardt in a statement.

Active military members already received free passes, but that courtesy is now being extended to all veterans and Gold Star families.
