WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah – A Utah mom is sharing her story after a terrifying incident on Interstate 215.

Jan Krystkowiak, the wife of Utes head basketball coach Larry Krystkowiak, was driving her daughters to volleyball practice last Wednesday when the window of her car suddenly shattered.

“All of the sudden I saw this rocket coming right at us,” Krystkowiak said. “When it hit the car, at first it sounded like a gun went off.”

That foreign object was a piece of metal debris left on the road. When the car driving ahead of Jan’s hit the object, it launched toward her car.

“I just looked down and remembered, I am covered in glass,” Jan said. “I looked at my daughter. She didn’t say a word.”

Aside from being covered in glass, no one in the car was injured. Had the item’s trajectory changed by a few inches, Jan believes this outcome could have been much different.

“Had it not hit that side-view mirror, it was coming for my head,” Jan recalled.

She is thankful she was alert and was able to brace herself for the impact. She hopes this incident can serve as a useful reminder to other drivers to not only be focused, but to secure loose items to their vehicles.

“Oh, if someone was texting. Granted, if you’re not paying attention, there is going to be worse,” she said.
