WEST JORDAN, Utah — A suspect is in police custody after a tense standoff in a West Jordan neighborhood Friday morning.
20-year-old Cesar Eduardo Aguilar was arrested on one count of criminal homicide and one count of aggravated burglary, both first degree felonies. He was also booked on 10 counts of assault on a peace officer or military member in uniform, and one count of burglary of a dwelling all second degree felonies, 12 counts of felony discharge of a firearm, and one count of criminal mischief, all third degree felonies.
According to arrest documents, Aguilar stabbed a male victim 15-18 times while in a vehicle with the victim and a witness.
A female witness who was also in the vehicle with Aguilar and the victim said Aguilar and the victim were talking about the price of some jewelry when Aguilar stated, "I'll show you what a real gangster is." Aguilar then pulled out a knife and began stabbing the victim from the backseat.
The witness in the vehicle drove the victim to the hospital, where he is in critical condition.
After stabbing the victim, Aguilar ran from the vehicle and unlawfully entered a home on Decora Way in West Jordan.
The homeowner yelled at Aguilar multiple times, demanding he leave the home. Aguilar left the first home and ran to a nearby home on Decora way where he barricaded himself inside and shot at ten police officers who were outside, according to arrest documents.
A man who lives in the basement of the home said the house started shaking and he heard gunshots. He called police and was able to escape the residence through a back window.
Officers observed gunshots coming through the rear windows as well as the front door of the house, arrest documents state.
While waiting for the SWAT team to arrive, Aguilar came out of the home and was taken into custody. He was found to be under the influence of narcotics and said, "people were after him," arrest documents state. He also told police that he stabbed the male victim in order to protect the female who was also in the vehicle.
The areas west and south of 6927 South Coneflower Court were ordered to shelter in place while police worked to investigate and take Aguilar into custody.
Aguilar was booked into the Salt Lake County jail where he is being held without bail.
