WASHINGTON COUNTY, Utah — A wildfire forced homes in a rural area of southern Utah to be evacuated Monday.
State wildfire officials most recently estimated the "Veyo West Fire" at 50 acres with no containment.
The western portion of Veyo — a town about 20 miles north-northwest of St. George — and the community of Brookside have been evacuated.
State Route 18 has been closed at milepost 20, as well as secondary roads west of S.R. 18 and north of Gunlock Road.
The blaze was started around 3 p.m. and was human-caused. The exact cause is under investigation.
Example of some of that erratic fire behavior 🔥 as shown by a Veyo resident who was recently told to evacuate. #VeyoWestFire @UtahWildfire | @fox13 pic.twitter.com/vvaelZ2gm6
