WASATCH COUNTY, Utah — A Utah man died Sunday while swimming at Deer Creek State Park.

According to state park officials, 24-year-old Jose Antonio Fuentes-Alvarez was swimming in the Rainbow Bay area around 2 p.m. when people in his group saw him struggling to keep his head above water. A few swam out to help him, but were unable to do so. Bystanders on the shore called 911 for help.

Utah State Parks staff, as well as search and rescue teams from Wasatch and Summit counties, began searching immediately and found Fuentes-Alvarez's body around 10 p.m. with a remotely operated vehicle. A dive team then recovered his body from about 16 feet deep, 80 yards from the shore.

Officials remind anyone visiting outdoor bodies of water to always wear a life jacket and swim with a "buddy" as conditions can change quickly and dramatically.
