SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is sharing some of its photos from a recent health checkup of a mother black bear and her newborn cubs.
"Biologists monitor the reproductive status of radio collared female bears by hiking to their dens in late winter. The mother's winter nap is briefly interrupted while the health and sex of her cubs are documented. After the quick checkup, the cubs are placed back into mom's care and the dens are covered up," a Facebook post from the DWR said.
The cubs weigh less than a pound at birth, and each one could grow to hundreds of times that weight in adulthood.
