PROVO CANYON, Utah — Search and rescue crews responded Saturday night to Bridal Veil Falls after a man became "cliffed out" with no safe way down.

The 37-year-old man called 911 shortly before 8 p.m., Sgt. Spencer Cannon with the Utah County Sheriff's Office said.

The operation was very technical, Cannon said, requiring specialized climbing equipment to get rescuers safely up to and down from the falls.

Cannon said the man was stranded high above the upper portion of the second waterfall at about 9,000 feet.

"We know where he is and he knows where he is, but he can't get down safely," Cannon said. "He did the right thing by choosing to stay put."

Cannon initially said the rescue mission could take several hours, but with good weather and the rescuers' expertise, they were able to retrieve him around 11 p.m., and he made it safely down the mountain just before midnight. He added that the man being rescued was also experienced, which helped things to go smoothly.
