The Utah Transit Authority is hosting a statewide art competition for K-12 students who will get an opportunity to have their work displayed on buses and trains.
The inaugural "My BeUTAHful Community" student art competition is accepting submissions from Monday (Feb. 1) through March 16. The theme is "Meet Your Neighbor."
Three winners will be chosen from each age category, divided up by grade: K-2, 3-6, 7-9, and 10-12.
The winners will have their art displayed inside UTA buses and trains (including both TRAX and FrontRunner) and on a "mural bus wrap" on the outside of a bus in Salt Lake City. They will go up in April of this year and will remain up for a year.
The winners will also receive a $50 gift card, and one overall winner will receive a $100 gift card.
Submissions are limited to 2-D visual art pieces. They can be made with paint, pencils, colored pencils, pastels, ink, markers, or even digital programs. Photography is not included.
The art needs to have the theme "Meet Your Neighbor" displayed creatively, UTA said, and should reflect that theme. It can feature public transportation, but it does not need to.
"Entries are encouraged to highlight the beauty and diversity of Utah’s communities and people," the competition's website states.
They added that the art must be of the student's own creation, without additions from teachers, parents or other adults. Adults can help the student with the process of submitting their piece to the competition, however.
Artwork can be submitted online here. They can also be mailed or dropped off in-person to:
