SALT LAKE CITY — A Herriman K-9 officer and a wanted fugitive were both killed late Thursday night during an operation conducted by the US Marshals Violent Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team in Salt Lake City.

The team had been called in to track down and arrest a man at an apartment complex at 500 E 300 S.

Officers said the deceased fugitive, Brian Francis Filion, 41, was a person of interest in a North Ogden fatal shooting just under a week prior.

When officers arrived, police say Filion exited an apartment and pulled out a gun.

"The subject fled, was subsequently chased by task force officers and US Marshals. He subsequently appears, brandished a weapon and was shot by task force officers," said Chief Deputy Brandon Holt, US Marshals Service, District of Utah. "The fugitive we were chasing was deceased. No injuries to officers at this time."

Although no human officers were hurt, a K-9 officer with the Herriman Police Department named "Hondo" suffered a gunshot wound to the sternum and later died at an emergency veterinary hospital.

A woman, whose relationship to the deceased man is unclear, was taken into custody on outstanding warrants. Her identity has not been released.
