MAGNA, Utah — A driver traveling in the wrong direction caused a fatal crash on I-80 Friday morning.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 9:30. The driver of a Dodge Neon was traveling west on I-80 near 8000 W.

"For an unknown reason, [the Dodge Neon] turned around and started traveling east in the westbound travel lanes. The driver of a westbound Subaru Crosstrek swerved to miss the wrong-way vehicle and the two collided in a side-swipe manner causing the westbound vehicle to roll several times," a news release from UHP said.

The Neon driver suffered minor injuries and the Crosstrek driver, whom UHP said had been properly restrained, died in the crash.

UHP did not release the identity of either driver, but the news release said the person who died in the crash was a 29-year-old South Jordan man.

"Troopers are investigating impairment as a contributing factor in the wrong-way driver's poor decision to make a U-turn into oncoming traffic," the news release said.
