HEBER CITY, Utah — A Heber City teen who underwent multiple surgeries after being struck by an SUV during a school lunch break has returned home.

Ava Saunders was critically injured on Sept. 27 as she crossed Main Street during a break at Wasatch High School. The 14-year-old was first airlifted to Heber Valley Hospital before being transported to Primary Children's Hospital in the Salt Lake-area.

Last week, a team of local law enforcement officials, along with the school's resource officer, led an escort to bring Saunders home after her months-long hospitalization.

A photo shared by the department showed Ava standing in front of friends and family at her home.

"We want to wish Wasatch High Student Ava Saunders the best in her recovery!," the Park City Police Department posted to social media.

Back in September, Saunders' family said "she is strong, and will get through this."
