Attempted stop of stolen vehicle results in exchange of gunfire; Suspect killed, WJ officer injured

WEST JORDAN, Utah — One suspect was killed and one officer sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound in an officer-involved shooting Sunday night in West Jordan.

According to West Jordan Police, a civilian was following a stolen Chevrolet truck that belonged to one of their family members when they called police around 8 p.m.

When police encountered the truck in the area near 2400 West AND 7700 South, WJPD Sgt. J.C. Holt says multiple people inside refused to get out, then at some point one occupant got out and exchanged gunfire with officers.

One suspect, who was not identified, died.

One police officer was shot in the upper shoulder area but is expected to recover.

“Unfortunately one of our officers was also struck with gunfire. he took a round kind of in his upper shoulder area just above where our ballistic vests go," said Sgt. JC Holt with the West Jordan police department. "It went through and lodged back in his shoulder. Fortunately, he's ok we do expect him to make a recovery it's a non life threatening injury at this point he's receiving treatment."
One other officer was involved but uninjured.

Police did not know as of Sunday night how many rounds were fired or who shot first.

A designated officer-involved critical incident team independent of West Jordan Police will conduct an investigation.
