WASHINGTON COUNTY, Utah — A lightning-caused fire is burning in southern Utah near the town of Leeds according to Utah Fire Information.

The “Spirit Creek fire” was reported around 4:30 Monday afternoon. It had burned an estimated 100 acres and there was zero containment as of 11:00 a.m. Tuesday.

The fire is located 1.5 miles northeast of Oak Grove Campground. Oak Grove Campground and Browse Guard Station are closed due to fire danger.

No injuries have been reported and no structures have been destroyed or threatened.

It is burning between Pig and Spirit Creeks in oak brush, mixed conifer, and pinyon juniper. Fire crews on scene are monitoring fire activity while aviation resources have been ordered due to the difficult access for ground personnel. Fire activity is creeping and smoldering through dead and down fuels with some isolated trees torching on the interior of the fire perimeter. Fire activity will likely increase Tuesday afternoon as the relative humidity drops, but it is not expected to make significant movement.
