BEAR LAKE COUNTY, Idaho — A snowmobile rider died Saturday after being caught in an avalanche in southeastern Idaho.
This is the second fatal avalanche in Idaho in two days. Another snowmobiler was killed Friday in a slide that occurred in the Sawtooth National Forest.
The Bear Lake County Sheriff's Office said that 48-year-old Allen Foss of Preston, Idaho was buried under a large amount of snow and died from his injuries.
The avalanche occurred around 11 a.m. Saturday near Sherman Peak. Other snowmobilers used probes to search for Foss, but he had died by the time they found and uncovered him.
Search and rescue crews from Bear Lake, Caribou and Franklin counties were able to recover his body from the mountain despite "precarious" conditions.
Officials emphasized the extremely high current avalanche risk level, and they urged those who do choose to venture out into the backcountry to have the proper equipment, including avalanche beacons.
A GoFundMe has been set up for the Foss family.
