SALT LAKE COUNTY — Search and rescue crews recovered the body of a hiker Sunday afternoon in Little Cottonwood Canyon.
According to Salt Lake County Sheriff's Search and Rescue, a group of hikers came across the victim who had fallen to his death near the east face of Dromedary Peak around 11 a.m.
The group was on a steep scree field, about 200 feet below the summit, when they discovered the man's body. They were attempting the Cottonwood Traverse at the time.
The Utah Department of Public Safety dispatched its helicopter and flew two SAR members into the area. They were then able to hike to the scene, and the deceased man was hoisted from the area by the helicopter.
He was later identified as 26-year-old Andrew Acuff.
Unified Police and the SAR team expressed their condolences to his family and friends.
Unified Police Sgt. Melody Cutler added that the trail where the hiker fell is dangerous and for experts only. This was the second search and rescue mission in that area in the past month.
