SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah — Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office confirmed the hiker who fell over 100 feet at Devils Castle Trail in the Alta area was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was 16 years old.
Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office, Alta Marshals, and the Utah Department of Public Safety Aero Bureau responded. Upon arrival, first responders located a 16-year-old male who was pronounced deceased at the scene. The hiker was with three companions when he fell, another person in the area witnessed the fall and called 911.
Responders afterwards worked to safely assist the three remaining members of the group who were still above the ridgeline.
Access to Devils Castle area will be closed until Friday.
"Our thoughts are with this young man’s family, friends, and everyone who was with him during this tragic incident,” said Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera. “I am grateful to our Search and Rescue volunteers and all of the responding agencies who worked together in extremely difficult terrain to reach the group and bring the remaining hikers to safety.”
