Salt Lake City one of worst U.S. cities for stolen vehicles

SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City has a lot of things to brag about, but there's one that residents might want to sweep under the rug.

A new study shows that SLC is among the worst cities in the U.S. when it comes to stolen vehicles. In fact, Salt Lake City ranks No. 4 overall.

Over 450,000 vehicles were stolen in the country in 2019, with nearly 4,650 of those thefts coming right here in Utah's largest city, according to AutoinsuranceEZ, and 17,004 total vehicles for the three years between 2017 and 2019.

If you feel like Salt Lake City should be at the top of the list, you're in luck as the city is the highest-ranked city in a Republican state. So, you know, there's that.

And if you're embarrassed about SLC's ranking, there may be good news on the horizon. Car thefts in Salt Lake City have declined by 35 percent between 2017-2019. So, you know, there's that.
